I loved Harry Potter films. But this just isn't as salvageable as those are, and I can't make excuses or look past things. You kill the story, you kill the movie.
So unfortunately, it isn't good. Why is it still three stars for me? Those two are saving graces. Otherwise, I really really hate to say it, but you might appreciate having better memories of these characters written in pages, rather than having their tale torn apart on screen.
I have read the first three books in this series and the books were very good. I liked this series as well as the Twilight series, I am not a hater of either.
I had to see the first movie twice before I made up my mind about how much I liked the movie. The reason was that the movie is different than the book.
I think this is a problem that most people who read the first book had with the movie. I have read so many books that have been made into movies that I have stopped comparing the books to the movies.
I now just watch the movie and decide if I like it or not. I enjoyed seeing the first book come to life even though some things were changed.
I loved the southern accents and southern regional things, it was somehow more pronounced in the movie than in the book-I didn't hear the southern accents when I was reading the book.
The most important thing was that the romance and mystery of the storyline work and it did for me. The movie was made differently but was still cohesive for a young audience.
It is a shame that the movie didn't do better at the box office. I am guessing that the next three books won't be made into movies.

Teenager Ethan Wate is obsessed with his urge to finish high school and go on to college in order to leave the small town of Gatlin, South Carolina behind, until a mysterious girl begins to inhabit his dreams.
When he meets Lena Duchannes, a newcomer who has just enrolled in his school, Ethan knows she is the girl in his dreams. Lena is rejected by the rest of her classmates for being the granddaughter of Macon Ravenwood, whom the town's superstitious residents consider to be a devil-worshiper.
But Ethan gives her a ride anyway and they fall in love. Lena reveals to her new boyfriend that she is a witch, and that on her sixteenth birthday she will be claimed by either the forces of light or of darkness.
She will remain in the light, but only if she does not remain in love with Ethan. To make matters worse, her evil mother, Sarafine, is casting spells to push Lena to the dark side.
Ethan joins her in a search to find a magic spell to save their doomed love. Will the lovers succeed? I enjoyed this film it was entertaining enough, though I understand many fans are unhappy with the adaptation.
Good supporting cast ,the acting was good as well, and Alden Ehrenreich and Alice Englert had nice chemistry as Ethan and Lena. A nice little story about supernatural powers, good vs evil, love and the power of love.
For those looking for a good fantasy movie with love, action, and funny moments, this is the film for you. It was good from the beginning to end.
A mix of Twilight theme and Adams family with special abilities; the film was a mixture of segregation and intergration with the locals Worth a watch and perhaps a sequel would be even better.

Would recommend. I really loved the book and couldn't wait for the film but I have to say I was extremely disappointed. I loved the characters Ethan and Lena and their whole love story in the book but I found Ethan really irritating in the film, he comes across as simple, and has an extremely annoying drool in his accent.
I also felt that Lena lost some of her character in this film. Their relationship is glossed over as well, so much of the story is missing..
I really feel that this film does not do the book justice. Probably more enjoyable for someone who has not read the book.

The movie got the main events pretty much right so that is all that matters. The effects were pretty amazing and I have nothing to complain about on the acting.
But the only thing that bothers me is that people keep calling this Twilight. For one, Twilight has poor acting and a stupid story line.
I read the books before the movies, and they were only okay. This has a fantastic story line and it is more Yes it has magic and what not but he likes her because of her!
Not because he "just cant stay away from her". The movie does have a lot of romance but it's more believable that they really care for each other.
It is an insult comparing this amazing book and pretty good movie to Twilight. Yes if you like Twilight you should like this too, just because Twilight was made into a movie first does not mean that this should be compared to it.
