This is not really a horror movie, although it's scary enough. Based on a Stephen King novel. I won't reveal how this plays out, but I felt it went off track at the end.
Carla Gugino is great, and deserves a lot of credit for making the script work. It's a very small cast of characters, but she really stands out in the way she manages the changes her character goes through.

Jessie miraculously pulls a hand out of a cuff and breaks free. She gloats to Gerald, but then turns around and tells herself, the one still trapped, that it is easy to escape.
Gerald and the self-assured Jessie tell things about herself and Gerald that she never had the courage to acknowledge. They trigger her to remember the glass of water above the bed, which she is able to reach but cannot bring all the way to her mouth.
The hallucinations remind her of the tag she put on the shelf, which she rolls into a drinking straw in order to reach the water.
Jessie falls asleep, wakes up in the dark, and sees a tall, deformed, obscured figure who reveals a bag of various bones and trinkets.
She closes her eyes saying, "You're not real. Gerald begins to call Jessie "Mouse", which unsettles her.
Gerald teases Jessie about the disfigured man she saw, whom he calls "the man made of moonlight", and points out what he suspects is a bloody footprint on the floor.
Jessie remembers cutting her hand the night of the assault after she squeezed a glass too hard when her mother asked her about the eclipse.
The adult Jessie smashes the water glass and cuts her wrist in a way that enables her to peel back the skin , allowing her bloody hand to slip through the cuff.
She drags the bed to the key, and unlocks her other hand. She drinks water and bandages her wrist, but then passes out on the floor from blood loss and fatigue.
When she wakes, the "man made of moonlight" is at the end of the hall, and she gives him her wedding ring for his trinket bag.
She makes it to her car and drives away, but sees the man again in the back seat. The car crashes into a tree, but people from a nearby house come out.
Six months later, Jessie is writing a letter to her year-old self, struggling to write with her wounded hand. Voice-overs and scenes describe how she had pretended to have amnesia over the whole ordeal of being trapped, avoiding painful questions.
She used some of Gerald's life insurance to start a foundation for victims of sexual abuse. But each night the "man made of moonlight" still appears before her as she falls asleep.
Jessie arrives at court as the moonlight man is being sentenced, and calls for his attention. He quotes what she said before leaving the house, indicating that he was in fact there at the time.
Seeing also Gerald's and Tom's face where his face is, she says, "You're so much smaller than I remember", and walks triumphantly out into the street with the sunlight gleaming down on her.
Trevor Macy produced the film through Intrepid Pictures. In an interview with Rue Morgue in September , Flanagan stated that the film adaptation would be released by Netflix.

Nice to see an actor like Carla Gugino finally get a great role like this. Alec B Super Reviewer. Nov 07, One of those single location films in the vein of Buried or Frozen, and again it surprisingly works really well.
It's a character study of this woman more than anything else, and a damned intriguing one at its best moments.
At its worst, it can drag a little, and sometimes get a little silly. The ending in particular I really didn't like.
Not the ending of her story, that works out fine, but the ending involving the reveal of one of her visions that feels so goofy and tagged on that it just leaves you with a real awkward taste at the end.
Still, the stuff that works in the movie works. More creep and uncomfortable than horrifying, but it does mess with your head in an effective way.

Having said that, however, there's a few King movies available to me across Prime and Netflix, two of these being Carrie and The Shining. I think Pet Sematary is somewhere on there too.
I could have also watched It: Chapter One if I hadn't already seen it over a month ago. Regardless, the point I'm trying to make is that when you think of Stephen King film adaptations, you tend to think about the adaptations of his more famous books, some of which I already mentioned.
Those are the movies you would tend to gravitate to in a month where, theoretically, you should be watching all horror movies. Having said that, Gerald's Game, to a lot of people, is not the first King book that comes to mind when they talk about his works.
In fact, my aunt, who's the biggest Stephen King fan I know, and my mom, who's more of a casual fan, both said that they could not get into Gerald's Game, in the slightest.
My mom was less into it. The way I gather it, it seems that King, who's usually very heavy with the details, may have gone a little overboard with it in this book.
After an attempt to reignite the passion in their marriage goes awry, Jessie is left handcuffed to a bed in a secluded house with her husband, Gerald, dead.
Not only must she break free but she must avoid being killed by a wild dog that figures that Jessie is on the menu. Then she starts to hallucinate and reminisce.
