Marcus W Super Reviewer. Oct 11, A young girl falls for another woman. Adele Exarchopoulos's face is one of the most expressive I've seen on an actress in a very long time.
She has the capability of rendering an entire film's worth of character motivation and contradiction in a single close-up, and her leading lady, Lea Seydoux, is a fitting and remarkable complement.
The performances in Blue Is the Warmest Color are the highlights of the film, and to watch this acting master class is a thrill in and of itself.
The story isn't much to write about. A woman tries men, falls for a woman, the relationship encounters difficulty, the end. It's all as one might predict, but that doesn't mean that the variances of individuality don't give the film a vitality and spark that is absent from many modern-day romances.
Overall, good acting is sometimes enough to make a good film. Jim H Super Reviewer. Sep 29, It has certainly been very difficult for them to make this film.
The director : Bravo to him. There are some scenes which are just fantastic : The first meeting between them, the encounter between them in the lesbian bar in which Adele is in a strange world as adolescent.
The tree scene, where they actually get in love both of them. The level of a good love story with all it's feelings and situations has been raised to a higher one.
Who can ever do this better. And the last remark. The film treats the love story, it's personal problems, the passion, but does not handle the problems which can have their family or friends, not in detail.

Amazon Second Chance Pass it on, trade it in, give it a second life. Amazon Renewed Like-new products you can trust. The book's author Julie Maroh was very supportive of the film's production and praised Abdellatif Kechiche with his originality; however, she wasn't pleased with the sex scenes and felt that they failed to capture the lesbian heart of the story.
The first film adaption of a graphic novel to win the Palme D'Or. Over hours of footage was shot. According to Abdellatif Kechiche , he had originally agreed, in writing, to deliver a 2-hour film.
He subsequently showed the producers two different cuts of the film, and all parties agreed that the longer version was better.
Initially planned to be shot in two months, the film took nearly five-and-a-half months. Adele appears in every scene. Coincidentally, the very day the film won the Palme d'Or prize at the Cannes Film Festival 26 May , same-sex marriage was legalized in France.
The original French title also has a subtitle, "Chapters 1 and 2". Adele said that the first scene she shot with Seydoux was her dream sequence and she laughed at the humorous absurdity of meeting someone for the first time naked.
She laughed upon seeing Lea approaching her bed without her clothes on but she said that it helped them to break the ice and to establish a comfort level that will make them trust each other in intimate scenes where they feel most vulnerable.
Abdellatif Kechiche also used this scene to test Seydoux's commitment to the role and to also forge a complicity between the actresses.
Abdellatif Kechiche felt that Seydoux "shared her character's beauty, voice, intelligence and freedom" and that she has "something of an Arabic soul".
He was subsequently added to the movie and also contributed his music on the soundtrack. She explained further that Kechiche gravitates to unknown actors and actresses and that there has to be a deeper reason why he did his unprecedented move of casting a more known actress for his film.
Abdellatif Kechiche developed the premise for Blue Is the Warmest Colour while directing his second feature film, L'esquive He met teachers "who felt very strongly about reading, painting, writing" and it inspired him to develop a script which charts the personal life and career of a female French teacher.
However, the concept was only finalised a few years later when Kechiche chanced upon Julie Maroh's graphic novel, and he saw how he could link his screenplay about a school teacher with Maroh's love story between two young women.
American audiences aren't used to it. It's a choice by the director. We all have sex, it's like a drug, everyone loves it.
We had to show how making love to someone is visceral. We had to convey how much of yourself you give over. So we chose to show to everyone the emotion behind the discovering of one's sexuality.
We are adults, so come on. Feeling out of place there she notices and then follows a group of women to a lesbian bar. She is startled to see female couples kissing each other in reckless abandon and the atmosphere of freedom.
There she again runs into the blue-haired girl whose name is Emma, a fine arts student and they have a short conversation.
Emma goes to meet Adele at her school. They sit on a bench and talk; they discuss Sartre. Emma says how his philosophy helped her in finding her freedom and asserting her values.
The question of identity emerges here as Emma captures a side of Adele which is hidden and mysterious. This scene is significant because it represents the homophobia prevalent in a supposedly multicultural France.
In their next meeting, it is Adele who takes the first step and kisses Emma. They both break into smiles, a moment confirming the beginning of their relationship.
They engage in wildly passionate lovemaking and the scene which captures their rapture is filled with warm hues.
Adele metaphorically bids goodbye to her childhood in her birthday scene coinciding with the start of a new chapter in her life.
She dances sensuously revealing a side of hers which is usually buried. She is left seemingly uneasy in the presence of highly accomplished individuals whose conversations on intellectual subjects she could only witness without participating in them herself.
Instead, she is left only serving them food and tending to them. Adele becomes a nursery school teacher in order to give back to the education system that taught her so much.
But Emma wants her to achieve her greater creative potential. She urges Adele to write professionally and is embarrassed that the only thing she has written despite her talent is her diary.
The socioeconomic, cultural and intellectual differences between the women put an invisible strain on their bond. And when out of a mood of isolation Adele is unfaithful to Emma which she discovers later, it only adds fuel to the fire.
It is a truly heartbreaking moment in the film. At the brief meeting when Adele and Emma meet after a long time, Adele tearfully confesses that she still loves her and always will.
But Emma rejects her. But she is devastated as she realizes that Emma has really moved on in her life. The gallery is filled with images of Adele.
A dejected Adele walks out with Samir in pursuit of her in the opposite direction. Her walking away having accepted loss is a moment of her extreme loneliness and yet a newfound liberation.
