Verified Purchase. I am disappointed by this movie. It's extremely vulgar. There's little to no substance in the plot.
The Transformers themselves are almost inconsequential. It feels like you could put any giant robot into the movie and it would still work.
Just take out the words energon and all spark. Those are the only two words in the movie that make it feel like Transformers for me. The whole thing is full of raunchy jokes that don't add anything to the plot.
I know this is a PG movie and aimed at adults It just really disappoints me that they aren't making Transformers movies I can take my son to.
The Transformers are his heroes. I think this detail is what upsets me the most about this film franchise. However, it would still be forgivable if the films were actually good.
Honestly, they just feel like escapism fantasy for guys with tons of suggestive camera shots of attractive women and not enough autobot character development or dialogue.
I don't know who these films are targeted towards, but I can't imagine fans of the Transformers liking them. Dear lord. The first movie may have had only so much real substance, but at least it was just harmless brain candy.
This movie is actively offensive, and that is a shame because the concept and the basics of the storyline had the potential to produce some more silly, action-packed fun similar to what came before it.
What on Earth went wrong!? Dumbing down the humourous elements so that comedy on the level of poop 'n' fart jokes is the height of hilarity is a serious issue.
What made the silly humour funny and not stupid in the first movie was that people were playing it straight regardless of how absurd the situation was.
In this movie we have overblown, hammy acting and mugging for the camera so that anything that's supposed to be funny ends up looking and sounding like it should be aimed at the nursery school crowd.
It was not a good change. The other problem would be the ridiculous amount of fan service. I am not a big fan of the original Transformers and so I know only so much about it, but I was able to appreciate and be entertained by the fun elements of the first movie.
I'm sure that movie also had fan service in it, but it was nicely done and presented in such a way that I was never at a loss because of it.
I may not have lots of Transformers knowledge, but I am a Star Trek fan and a comic book collector, so I know cruddy fan service when I see it, even when it's not necessarily meant for me.
For example, we got new characters who had no introduction, character development, or background, but it was obvious that the viewer was supposed to already know who they were.
For me, everything those characters did fell flat because there was no context and I had no idea who they were or what they were doing there.
It was meant solely for fans, and if you weren't a fan with the insider knowledge that allowed you to 'get it,' then there were entire swathes of this movie that came off as either nonsensical or just plain stupid.
The 3rd X-Men movie 'Last Stand' had the exact same problem, and that movie was a stinker in part because of that very issue.
I will admit that effects were good and some of the action was nice. Beyond that, this movie earns a big NOPE from me.
Transformers the entire series of movies is very nostalgic for me. Gave me goosebumps. This one was okay.
Shia LeBeouf shined like a real star in it. He did a flawless job. Meghan Fox though. Yes shes hot, but I wish she acted in it.
It seems like her sole purpose in this was to pose on various items. I wish she did a better job portraying Sam's love interest. I could have been much more emotionally involved with the movie if she had actually acted instead of posed for Maxim the entire movie.
I gave this movie 5 stars even though I only watched a few minutes of it because I think it's probably a great movie for young kids and I didn't think it fair to slam it because I didn't like it and there may be some adults that like this kind of movie.
Bottom line, if Transformers is your bag or if you have young kids, then buy it and enjoy. Otherwise skip it. I may be a grandma, but my heart is young and I live action films with fantasy involved.
I love all the Transformers movies and this one didn't disappoint. I especially love the fact that the film takes place mostly in "Egypt", where I currently reside.
And it tickled me to death to see them travel from the Red Sea and Bay of Aqaba to Cairo by car in no time flat it takes me 7 hours to drive from Cairo to Dahab on the Red Sea!

That gives us the second kind of interesting film — where the project itself is worthless, but there is some clear new thing emerging that by itself makes the soul tingle with expectation over how it might be used by a real artist.
This and its previous version are such a movie. They contain something that I think is important. I mentioned it in the comment on the first one and can only repeat the observation here.
We are seeing here the development of a visual style that is more than a style I think. In an ordinary movie, the framing and staging is expository: you are shown what you need to see to make sense out of what is happening.
If it is a boxing match with Sly Stallone, you see what is essential: you see perhaps the possibility, the actor, the action and the effect.
Its all there, very carefully engineered. In fact, this engineering — a very constrained subset of what can be photographed — is what constitutes the contract we have in communicating visually.
What I first saw in "Black Hawk Down" was an engineering of what you do not see. Some of the action happened around us, the camera eye moving as if it were panicked and seeing only a part of what is going on.
You could not make out the sense of what caused what. Because we so solidly expect to see everything that causes things, when we deviate it is a powerful statement.
What we have here are transformations and fights that are only partially framed. We are denied enough information to know precisely what is happening.
We know there is an exact order to how the many parts fold into an automobile or plane, but we often see just motion.
The effect is most pronounced in battle scenes when the viewer would be panicked in the motion and threat of war.
Confusion and lack of comprehension is part of the effect. It isn't just random noise though; we know that though the screen is filled with scores of metal shapes apparently in chaos, they belong to two beings.
We cannot sort out who is who. We know that within those beings, the animators have programmed coherent bodily motion. We know that each blow is basically like those of Stallone, but we do not know any of the physics behind it, or even which way it is going.
This is an amazing visual experience. I saw it in Imax. Sure, the film otherwise is ridiculous, and I find the cosmology troubling.
But it is notable that while they go to extreme lengths to explain every point in the history of why these beings are here and why they fight, they go to equal trouble to keep the visual understanding of the fight from us.
