OK, lets be real here, you can not please everyone, it's impossible, now the bitter and disappointed aside, this film rock's.
I'm a fan of the games myself, I play them and have really enjoyed the franchise as a whole, that being said I went into this with an open mind, unlike allot of people I think.
On first viewing the movie I was left feeling a little bit lack lustre, I wasn't really sure if I liked it or not, but upon a second viewing I feel in love with it.
I think thats the fault with all films like this and there's just not enough time in one movie to fully explore everything.
I want to know more, do Fassbender and his rag tag team rebuild the brotherhood? I really, really want a second and third movie to find out more about the charter's because the film feels like the opening act with a promise for so much more which, if they go ahead with a second movie I think they can deliver.
Assassins Creed has a great deal going for it, with Fassbender playing both characters with full conviction - his ancestor, witnessed through the dna-based 'magic' of a machine named The Animus - and his modern day descendant Callum, who's a convicted murderer.
It also has the benefit of Justin Kurzel, whose version of Macbeth was genuinely excellent. Kurzel films everything with a well-framed, very dramatic pace, his camera swooping and diving to follow the many athletic stunts, but rarely obscuring them in the way Michael Bay does in his Transformers pics.
The plot has the potential to confuse, but is well explained by the various supporting characters and it takes inspiration from the various Assassins Creed games, although perhaps most heavily from the first.
Fans myself included will be delighted with the parkour, leaping assassinations and fantastic stunt work as the characters carry out their missions and escapes with athletic grace and dazzling aggression.
There are also several laughs in there for the series' fans, with in jokes like a smashed pigeon coop during one particularly exciting chase sequence.
The locations are gorgeous, and well utilised although there are perhaps one or two soaring bird moments too many.
The characters are also better fleshed out here than most video game adaptations - feeling like they actually have personalities and motivations in most cases.
The portrayal of The Animus is extremely fun and much more cinematic than the series standby of a shiny bed, and Fassbender commits to the hallucinatory after-effects with vigour as well.
The film has three very exciting major action sequences that really get the blood roaring, and elevate this above the usual crop. But there it stops.
Oddly, everything falls badly apart for the final ten minutes of the film, where the enemy appear to stop caring about trying to stop the Assassins - even with blatant imminent danger right in front of them - and all attempts to catch them effectively cease as well.
This renders what should have been the most dramatic scene of the film such a damp squib that, for me, it turned a five star movie into four. What harmed it even more was the arrogant presumption on the part of the studio that it would be successful enough to guarantee a sequel.
This leads to a character changing allegiances twice in ten minutes and setting up a blatant sequel-bait motivation that doesn't work even if the screenplay is viewed in the most charitable way possible.
You get the impression that Kurzel and co were allowed to run a fantastic race and were then stopped at the last hurdle so the studio could work out how to keep the money train rolling.
It's a bad decision and one that severely hurts the movie. Luckily, what's gone before is exciting and propulsive enough that I'd still recommend giving it a go.
So, the general concept of the Assassin's Creed games are: a piece of technology called the Animus which allows you to view your ancestor's lives through genetic memory, only your ancestors happen to be a secret brotherhood of assassins who fight for freedom against the oppressive power seeking Templars who largely influence everything in the world.
As such, you end up witnessing events in history that played out differently than what you read about in books or internet or learnt at school seriously Da Vinci helps invent things for the assassins, Queen Victoria seeks the aid of assassins, several members in the American Revolution were Templars and even Darwin gets involved.
Not only that, the Assassins are constantly trying to prevent the Templars from getting powerful artefacts from an ancient civilisation with highly advanced technology.
With subtle elements of philosophy, religion, politics and life lessons. Interesting, right? The film manages to get all that right well maybe not the last part about subtle elements and that's where it stops though.
The film is a semi tie-in to the games, referencing several events that happened in the games whilst being distant from the stories.
I felt it also assumed that us the viewers had an understanding of the games to fully understand the film. Which I did.
I understood the Templars and the Assassins. Yet the film still feels weak. I felt that the film should've been completely separate from the games, a standalone film or series.
Introduce all these elements gradually. It was also more slow paced, dragging things out while cramming as much lore into it as possible.
Despite a talented cast it felt short of telling a story I'm familiar with. This is one game series that would've worked better as a TV series, giving it more freedom.
