The soundtrack was great and used so well. The shots were beautiful. The people and places looked real. This movie really made me think - about parenting, about life, about art, about my childhood.
But it still managed to be fun to watch. It's amazing how much more interesting stories are when they pass the Bechdel Test! Real complex characters and stories are not just for chick flicks.
I don't think it was just because of the similarities to my own life that I found it so relatable. My male friends loved it just as much as I did.
It was also just so well done. And funny! It reminded me of Boyhood, I which I loved madly, but this easier to watch.
This is the kind of story of real lives that rarely gets told in Hollywood. The acting is superb and the story and music are an arresting look back at the 's as feminism creeps into everyday politics.
The kids are really cute and smart as they lead the adults into new territory in this coming-of-age story of a fifty-something single mother played by the delightful and enormously talented Annette Bening who tries to impart wisdom and adult survival skills to her year-old son by enlisting the younger set from her boarding house and neighborhood.
The chain-smoking and its consequences are difficult to watch, however, although accurate to the times. You will not cry, though, as you laugh along at the awkwardness and wry humor.
I love movies that depict finally! All three lead actresses are wonderful. The depictions of eclectic decor common to the time mirror the eclectic characters.
