Mel Smith 'A gentleman and a scholar' Video

Smith and Jones discuss the BeatlesTo everybody who ever met him, Mel was a force for life. He had a relish for it that seemed utterly inexhaustible.
I will look back on the days working with him as some of the funniest times that I have ever spent. We probably enjoyed ourselves far too much, but we had a rollercoaster of a ride along the way.
Fantastic fun, making shows. Huge parties and crazy times. And Mel was always ready to be supportive. Nobody could have been easier to work with. Sad news: The actor and director Mel Smith has died at the age of 60, his agent Michael Foster has confirmed.
But it was Alas Smith And Jones, which lasted for ten series over 16 years, that guaranteed their place in the comedy firmament. In later years they set up the independent television company, Talkback Productions.
We never had an argument, in fact. We loved performing together. He was a very generous and supportive actor. We had a good deal of fun.
He was a gentleman and a scholar, a gambler and a wit. And he was a brilliant actor. But he never took himself or the business too seriously.
We are all in a state of shock. We have lost a very, very dear friend. He had a wonderfully generous and sympathetic presence both on and off screen.
I feel truly sad at his parting. I spent three weeks in agony in hospital. It turned out I had a virulent throat infection.
In , Smith revealed that he had conquered a seven-year addiction to over-the-counter painkillers. It was all terribly grubby. The others often seemed wary or self-conscious in those early days.
Smith was never less than swaggering, bullish, noisy and brimming with confidence. Whether playing a prissy zoologist who had taught a gorilla to talk, a burly trucker or a floppy-fringed New Romantic in a Duran Duran spoof, he was instantly recognisable.
The skit made good use of his ability to down a pint of ale in one swift swallow. But inner tensions were pulling the group apart.
The bitterness and divisions rankled for years. In , when Stephenson appeared on Strictly Come Dancing, Smith made it plain that he was not a fan.
His friendship with Griff, by contrast, would endure for a lifetime. The running gag was how seriously they took these inane, barely coherent debates.
But behind the easy-going facade there was a driven man, a confessed workaholic. That brief sleep was more likely to be snatched in daylight than at night.
His energy for a good time was inexhaustible, and during his womanising years at the height of his fame, he usually carried the party all the way to the bedroom.
But after a succession of semi-steady girlfriends, including comedienne Ruby Wax, he was smitten when he met year-old divorcee Pamela Gay-Rees.
Their first date was dinner one night in Harrogate, during a Smith and Jones tour. Within 24 hours Mel had asked Pam to marry him.
But I felt wrecked when I woke up a few hours later and could hardly get my socks on. Meeting Pamela also helped cure him of his fixation with gambling.
Smith always denied it was an addiction, but conceded that he would bet on almost anything, even two raindrops running down a window. One journalist who spent a day at the track with Smith claimed the star had gambled on the outcome of a race between a man and his dog, on a pub game of darts and on the predicted total of their restaurant bill.
Marriage to Pam might not have tamed him, but it helped to slow him down. At 35, he began to discover the attractions of a night in front of the telly — at least once in a while.
By the late Eighties, Smith had graduated from British television to Hollywood. He gained a cult-following after appearing as an albino torturer in the hugely popular family film The Princess Bride.
But he made no secret that he preferred directing to acting. But the years of full-throttle living had taken their toll.
Throughout the Nineties he had struggled with an addiction to prescription pills: first sleeping tablets and then painkillers containing the opiate codeine.
He blamed the pain of gout for kick-starting the habit. At the height of his secret crisis, he was swallowing 50 Nurofen Plus pills a day, even resorting to hiding them between pages of his scripts or behind books on shelves.
They just helped me relax. I was swallowing them like Smarties and they ate into my insides. In he was rushed to hospital with ulcers — the drugs had stripped away his stomach lining.
The withdrawal symptoms plunged him into a depressive slide, though he was able to lean heavily for support on his devoted wife Pam.
His lightning brain had clearly not been impaired — he scored 22 points and came second. Brain Donors Rocco Melonchek. DI Thomas.
